Best browser compatibility checker

I’m so freakin psyched. I found the best site EVER for taking browser shots. You see……life is not simple, people. A web designer/developer..er cant just create something fabulous and have it look perfectly on all browsers. Thanks to the suckage that is Internet Explorer, we need to be constantly checking to make sure everything is playing nicely. Previously, I was using http://browsershots.org/ which is fine, lots of options there, but your request goes into a queue and results take up to 30 minutes, often not receiving all of the shots you wanted. I usually found myself pestering my friendly Mexican for test shots from his PC. Inevitably, he felt the sting of my frustration, and that made for a sad Mexican.

Fortunately for my little tan friend, I have found Netrenderer… god dammit I love words with double er endings. Netrenderer provides INSTANT screenshots of your site in Internet Explorer 7, 6 or 5.5 on Windows. Lets look at an example, so you all can see what a difference a browser makes;

First, my pretty test site on my MacBook in Firefox:

Next, the same site looking all jagged and stoopid in IE 6 on a PC:

They even have options for mixed and difference overlays, so you can really get a good look at positional differences in IE6 and 7. They take screen shots of the site in both browsers, then lay them on top of each other:

Netrenderer is limited in browser options compared to browsershots.org, but all I really need is access to Internet Explorer on Windows. Thats the only browser I ever have problems with.

IPod Touch review

I recently got an IPod Touch. I had waited, wasn’t sure about getting one, I’ve never even had an IPod. I really just wanted it for browsing the internet and checking my email. Now that I have had it for a few weeks, I’ve come to the conclusion that it kicks major ass.

I can’t remember what I was typing in that picture. I was on a high. Amazed at all the awesomeness packed into such a tiny delicate package. Reminded me of myself. *tear*

This device has obviously made me much cooler than I was before, and no one ever thought that was possible. My mom thought I was as cool as any human could possibly be, and my friends thought I was incapable of ever being cool. Both proven wrong by the IPod Touch. Take that society!!

…I probably should have mentioned how useless this review was going to be at the beginning of this post. Sorry about that.

Lorem ipsum whaaat??? Have you ever seen that funky latin text on a site or template and wondered wtf those people are on? It’s just traditional filler text that designers use when trying out page layouts, text formatting, etc. Trust me, it’s much better than copy/pasting one word or phrase over and over, gives a more natural looking….flow…..or something.

ANYWAYS, there are lots of ways to get the lorem ipsum text, but MY favorite is a handy dashboard widget I found called Dolor sit amet. You really can’t get any simpler than this;

All you do is select characters, words or paragraph, then type how many you want (e.g. 4 paragraphs, 50 characters, 10 words) click the ‘to clipboard’ button and presto! It’s on your clipboard ready to be pasted into whatever you’re working on.

I love it, and you should too. Because I said so.

Paparazzi! For your Mac

It’s a crazy life, that of a fine web designer/developer/whatever..er like moi. I often find myself in crazy situations….like…needing to somehow get a screen shot of an entire web page. I’m talking full length, not just what can be seen in the limited height of the browser on my MacBook. (name dropping, I’m not ashamed.)

Fortunately, I found Paparazzi! This awesome little utility couldn’t be easier to use…

Just put a URL in, decide your sizes, and presto! I use it a lot when I’m developing behind closed doors, so to speak. When I don’t want a client watching me fuck their site up during the creative process, I just send them screen shots to approve along the way.

It’s also nice to take before and after screen shots when redesigning a site…

Do you take a lot of screen shots? I do. I take many many screen shots everyday. Actually, I don’t. That was a total lie. I do take a lot of screen shots though. Luckily I found the best dashboard widget EVER! It’s called Screenshot Plus! It gives you simple one-click control over taking screen captures of either the entire screen, a timed screen capture, a capture of just a specific window you have open, a capture of a dashboard widget, or a cross hair to drag a section to capture.

It’s pretty sexy looking too.

The easiest way to install dashboard widgets is to use Safari to browse to the widget page. When you download widgets while using Safari, it automatically installs them for you!

Handy color converter!

AppleSource has some pretty fucking cool apps, and here is a freebie that is SO handy! It’s an awesome color picker/converter. You can convert your HEX code to RGB and vice versa, AND it displays the color AND you can also use it as a color picker, by checking the ‘enable magnifier’ checkbox, your mouse is suddenly a magical color picking…magic….thingy.
